The tailings formed during the pyrometallurgical processing of copper
have a complex composition, dominated by iron silicate compounds, in particular
fayalite and spinel structures. Although the initial flotation processes effectively
separate the sulfide copper minerals, a certain amount of copper, gold and silver is
observed to remain in the tailings. As a result of the studies, it was determined by
scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that most of the gold in these flotation tailings
is present in a free state in pure mineralization. In this regard, a combined gravitational
and hydrometallurgical technology was proposed for the processing of flotation
tailings.
