Abstract

The paper compares two approaches to classroom assignment when
lesson times are fixed in advance: sequential room selection for each lesson and joint
assignment of rooms to all lessons in a time slot. Room suitability is scored by
capacity, room type and department. Room availability, sufficient capacity and
required equipment are mandatory conditions for all methods. In 15 synthetic test
instances constructed so that complete assignment is possible, the exact method
assigned rooms to all 480 lessons. The greedy method assigned rooms to 451 lessons
when lessons were processed in ID order and to 465 when larger groups were given
priority, leaving 3.1–6.0% of lessons without a room. These findings need to be
verified on real university timetables.
