This article analyzes the role of lime (CaO) in secondary flotation of wastes generated during the enrichment of copper-molybdenum ores based on scientific literature. Lime is one of the widely used reagents in the flotation of sulfide minerals to control the alkalinity of the medium, to inhibit the flotation of pyrite (FeS₂), and to selectively separate copper-molybdenum minerals from pyrite. During the analysis, the formation of Ca²⁺ and OH⁻ ions in an aqueous medium, the formation of hydrophilic calcium and iron hydroxide layers on the pyrite surface, and the effect on the adsorption of xanthate were considered. At the same time, it was shown that excessive use of lime can reduce the flotation activity of molybdenite (MoS₂) are possible. The article discusses the advantages and limitations of CaO for secondary flotation, the importance of pH control, the mechanism of pyrite suppression, and the optimization of reagent consumption. The results of the analysis show that the main task in the application of lime is not to provide the maximum amount of reagent, but to form an alkaline environment that sufficiently suppresses pyrite and preserves the beneficial flotation properties of molybdenite as much as possible.
